ABOUT BUAISOU

BUAISOU is an indigo farmer and dyer run by a small collective based in Tokushima, Japan, a region long known for its deep connection to natural indigo.

Founded by farmers and dyers who wanted to work with indigo from the ground up, BUAISOU is involved in every step of the process — from cultivating indigo plants and producing Sukumo (indigo compost), to fermentation, dyeing, and making finished products.

Our work is rooted in traditional Japanese indigo techniques, yet shaped by ongoing experimentation and dialogue with contemporary culture. Rather than preserving indigo as something fixed in the past, we approach it as a living material — one that continues to change through use, time, and human touch.

Each piece is dyed by hand in our studio, resulting in subtle variations that reflect the nature of the dyeing process. These irregularities are not flaws, but traces of time, labor, and material.

Through our products, collaborations, exhibitions and workshops around the world, we hope to share not only the beauty of indigo, but also the values behind making things slowly, responsibly, and with intention.

Materials & Process
We work exclusively with natural indigo, cultivating and processing the plants ourselves. By controlling every stage of production, we are able to maintain both quality and sustainability throughout our practice.
